Edinboro Elementary third and fourth graders created gifts for patients of the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ And Sailors’ Home in Erie. This state-operated long-term care facility for veterans and their spouses is the oldest of six state Veteran’s Homes in Pennsylvania operated under the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).

The students created an accordion art book during art class using painted papers, buttons, ribbons and recycled book pages. Students brainstormed ideas for the words on the front, inside and back and came up with words of gratitude and appreciation for the men and women in the home.

The front of the book reads, “We want to grow up to be …”, the inside reads, “Honorable, Brave, Inspiring, Courageous, Fierce” and the last page reads, “A Hero … just like you!” On the back the students wrote, “Thank you for your service! Made for you by the 3rd and 4th graders of Edinboro Elementary.”

The gifts will be part of a centerpiece used for their holiday dinner, with the opportunity for each resident to take them with them as a gift.
