Fifth grader collects donations for Blizzards of Blankets

JWPMS fifth grader Bailey Cannon has been collecting pillows and blankets for the Upper Room’s the Blizzard of Blankets.

The Blizzard of Blankets is the oldest project of the Upper Room, a homeless shelter in Erie. Since the shelter opened in 1995, they have helped about a quarter of a million people. The shelter supplies the homeless with blankets, clothing, or a place to stay.

Bailey’s contribution was part of a larger fundraiser hosted through her softball team, Erie Frost. Her desire to collect them in the mornings before school was part of her project inspired through Genius Hour, a project in Mr. Sturgess’ class where students are given sixty minutes once a week to work on a project of their choosing – anything that they want to study, learn, do, or create. The projects last a good part of the year, and students later present on what they studied, how they went about it, and what they accomplished.
