GMSD Launches New Reading Program

Posted on April 22, 2013, in Academics, Activities, Lancer Life

General McLane School District launched a new program in April that is designed to bring high school and elementary students together for reading.

HS2es (High School to Elementary School) Program is a unique program that uses high school students interested in pursuing a teaching career to tutor struggling readers at the elementary school level.  With the elementary school starting at 9:00 a.m. and the high school at 8:00 a.m., interested high school students schedule the “Education Academy” as their first period class and go to Edinboro Elementary School, where children come one hour early to develop their reading skills.

Training and materials for the high school students were developed by Literacy Coach Toni Kasparyczk and fourth grade teacher Julie White, who run the program.  The project is the brainchild of Edinboro Principal Randy White, who worked with high school principal Dan Mennow, to develop the program.
