Four General McLane High School students were recently recognized for their excellence in writing at Edinboro University’s Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition.  The competition featured 11 journalistic categories that garnered over 250 entries.  The entries were evaluated by a panel of faculty and student leaders involved in Edinboro’s media clubs.

GM student work was submitted in the print journalism competition in the categories of news, feature, opinion, and sports writing.  Senior Leah Breckley placed fifth in the news writing category for her piece entitled, “GM Takes to the Airwaves.” Junior Madeline Bruce placed third for her “Miss Peregrene Book to Movie Review” in the opinion category.  She was the recipient of a $25 prize.  Seniors Jon Carrier and Owen Watkins were recognized for their sports writing.  Carrier placed fourth for his “Baseball Preview.  Watkins took first place and a $100 prize for his “Concussion Discussion.”

Winners were recognized during Edinboro University’s Journalism Day. During the day students had the chance to hear from keynote speakers Mike Fenner, Sports Anchor and Reporter, JET-24/FOX66/YourErie.com and Joe Palka, Newscaster, Voice of America.  They also participated in public relations and broadcasting workshops and learned more about Edinboro’s Digital Media programs. General McLane School District Public Relations Director Marissa Orbanek served on a panel teaching students about public relations in school districts.

Congratulations to our students!
