JWPMS Students Help Bring More Tastykakes to Area

Every year, James W. Parker Middle School students write persuasive letters to Tasty Baking Company to explain how difficult it is to find their products and request that they bring more Tastykakes to Erie. Today, some of the school’s sixth graders learned the power of the pen.

Leo Hayes, Branch Sales Manager at Tasty Baking Company/Flowers Baking Co., visited the students Monday afternoon to share some exciting news: the students’  letters worked! Tastykake’s biggest display in the region is currently at the Edinboro Walmart, which is a direct result of the letters.

Flower Foods expanded its Tastykake distribution to Northwestern Pennsylvania last year. The students, who were in Mr. Weber’s fifth grade language arts class when they wrote the letters, received Tastykake samples as a thank you for their support.

Mr. Weber’s fifth grade language arts assignment coincides with the reading of Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. With the story set in Eastern Pennsylvania, it’s fitting that Tastykake’s Butterscotch Krimpets are the favorite food of the main character, Jeffrey Lionel Magee AKA “Maniac Magee.”  Tasty Baking Company is headquartered in Philadelphia.

Now, the students get to enjoy the book and their very own Butterscotch Krimpets, too!
