Students in the area will soon have an opportunity to combine two of their favorite hobbies – art and pets!

On Sunday, September 27, McKean Elementary art teacher Kathleen Johnson will host an event at the Because You Care (BYC) Adption Center in McKean.

A class for children ages 5-9 will be held at 5 p.m., and a class for children ages 10 and up is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The cost of each class is $15, and all profits go to BYC. Participants will discuss basic drawing skills and learn how our life experiences and memories can be beneficial when creating art. Dogs that are up for adoption at the Center will be brought out as models during the class, and students are encouraged to bring pictures of their own dogs to draw as well. Materials will be provided.

Because You Care, Inc. is a 501(c)3 animal rescue organization that works primarily through foster care. This non-profit takes in abandoned and abused animals and nurses them back to health, both physically and emotionally, and then finds them loving “forever” homes.

According to Johnson, her son sparked her interest in helping the local non-profit animal rescue organization. Each year, he raises money in support of the organization’s annual “Walk for Small Animals.” After joining the McKean Elementary School faculty last year, Johnson decided to use her art expertise to help raise awareness of the center and its mission.

She currently has one dog, Toby, a beloved, elderly Shetland Sheepdog cross.
