McKean Elementary Joins in Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month — and McKean Elementary in joining in the education!

Faculty and staff at McKean Elementary School will be participating in two “jean days” in April. The proceeds raised on these days will go towards Autism Awareness and will be presented at the Autism Awareness Walk on Saturday, April 27th at Presque Isle.

Last year, the District raised more than $500 for the Northwest PA Autism Society.

According to General McLane’s Autistic Support teacher Nicole McFadden, the NWPA Autism Society does many things for families as well as Autistic Support classrooms in our area and this is just one way to give back.  Last school year, John Kennedy and McFadden received a grant for an adaptive swing for the Autistic Support classroom.  This year, McFadden received a grant from the Autism Society for an adaptive bike to use for the high school’s program.

The Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness month since the 1970s in order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. For more information or to learn more about the walk in Erie, please visit
