McKean Students Subtract With a Pirate!

McKean Elementary School kindergarteners are making a connection between Pirates and subtraction.

Edinboro University student teacher Meg Dulion used the song “If You Subtract with a Pirate” to teach subtraction to kindergarteners in Miss Scott’s class. During the culminating activity, students dressed as pirates and marched down the hallway.

This song is utilized to study simple subtraction stories in the classroom. Each verse is comprised of stories that start with a certain amount of pirate belongings, pirate people, hats, parrots, etc. and then students subtract a certain amount to end up with a difference. Within the song, students identify that the answer to a subtraction problem is called the “difference” and talk about how subtraction involves always getting LESS.
