EE Second Grade Class Performs “Penguins on Parade”

Posted on March 15, 2013

Mrs. Dilmore’s second grade class performed the musical “Penguins on Parade” in Edinboro Elementary’s school cafeteria Thursday and Friday this week. The students sang, danced and performed the play “Tacky the Penguin” as part of their study of penguins. From penguin facts to penguin jokes (How do penguins get to school? On an icicle!), the second graders delighted the crowd with their knowledge of penguins.

Congrats to these second graders for a great performance!

ESL Students Add International Theme to Reading Day

Posted on March 6, 2013

General McLane High School’s ESL students added an international theme last Friday to the annual Read Across America Day. Students Emmanuel Otika, from Sudan (Africa) and Yana Zablotska, from Ukraine, performed for Mrs. Dilmore’s 2nd grade class and were also guest readers at the Edinboro Elementary library.

Emmanuel and Yana performed the poem I Hate My Hat to celebrate the Cat in the Hat’s hat and read three other books to the class. Washing Clean, a famous Ukrainian children’s tale about a dirty boy who won’t take a bath, was read in Russian and explained in English by Yana. Washing Clean author  Korny Chukovsky is a famous Russian children’s writer, who is compared to our Dr. Seuss of America.  According to ESL teacher Mary Murosky, many adults recite their favorite Chukovsky stories by heart, just as we do to our most memorable Dr. Seuss books.
Emmanuel and Yana also read The Spider Weaver: The Legend of the Kente Cloth, an African folktale that originated in the country of Ghana, and Christmas Spider’s Miracle, a Ukrainian holiday story about the universality of mothers and their love for their children.
Mrs. Dilmore’s students also participated in some hands-on activities that coincided with the books, as well as participated in an open discussion with Emmanuel and Yana about Africa and Ukraine.

GM Celebrates Read Across America Day

Posted on March 1, 2013

General McLane School District was one of the districts in Erie County, PA that celebrated Read Across America Day Friday. General McLane High School sent 36 seniors to be guest student readers to both Edinboro and McKean Elementary schools. The seniors spoke to the class about their favorite books and subjects and gave the students advice before reading to the students.

After the high school students left, the elementary students continued their commitment toward reading as they joined in a read-a-thon.

This marks the seventh year that high school students celebrated Read Across America Day at McKean Elementary and the first year that students brought the fun to Edinboro Elementary.

Read Across America is an award-winning literacy program that was designed to get students excited about reading. The event is held on the school day closest to March 2 ( the birthday of Dr. Seuss) and was founded by the National Education Association in 1997 through a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P., and Random House. More than 45 million children across the nation are expected to participate—making it the nation’s largest reading celebration.

Thirty-six seniors were selected to read to both Edinboro and McKean Elementary schools as part of the national Read Across America Day. These seniors above were the ones at McKean Elementary School.

After the reading by the high school student, students broke out on their own to take place in the read-a-thon.

LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center Speaks to Academy

Posted on February 25, 2013

The General McLane Academy of Arts & Engineering brought in executive director at the LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center Tyler Travis to speak with students last week as part of the medical program’s activities.

Travis spoke to the students about sports medicine and its opportunities beyond high school. Travis explained that sports medicine is one of the more competitive careers in the medical field. He also explained that as health continues to change and the benefits of exercise remain a hot topic, the field is striving for more people to get involved to create programs that overcome all different barriers.

“Physical education is more than just playing sports,” Travis said.

Travis received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University, Behrend and his Master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology with a concentration in Cardiac Rehabilitation from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Travis is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Health Fitness Specialist. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

The Academy of Arts & Engineering demonstrates the District’s commitment to excellence in education and offers a competitive educational curriculum for General McLane High School, one of the top schools with strong academics in Erie, PA. The Academy of Arts & Engineering is an enhancement to the District’s mainline curriculum that is specifically tailored for students, grades 10-12, with science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) related careers in mind. The Academy curriculum offers training in the areas of Engineering and Medical Technology in 2012, and expand to include Arts & Humanities in 2013.

The next GM Academy of Arts & Engineering event for both the Medical and Engineering Program is scheduled for March 20, 2013 from 10:45 – 11:25 a.m. General McLane’s Mike Kozuchowsky will host a problem solving activity. For more information, please contact Dan Mennow.
